2019 Audi A7: 6 Things We Like, 3 Things We Don’t
Audi redesigned the A7 for 2019 to make it more comfortable, more powerful and stocked with more standard safety features than the previous generation. What it doesn’t get, thankfully, is a dramatic change to its sleek lines, particularly the elongated roofline and tapered tail. This is one handsome sedan, and it competes directly with other coupelike sedans including the forthcoming BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe and Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class.

As much as we liked the outgoing A7, some updates were overdue — chiefly, a confusing multimedia system with controls mounted between the front seats. Audi has streamlined the A7’s tech features to bring the sedan in line with the rest of its lineup. It even gets a little more headroom for rear occupants, though taller passengers might still graze the ceiling.

One thing we’re glad Audi didn’t change for 2019 is the overall shape of the A7. The distinctive silhouette and flowing lines give the A7 — even in its previous generation — a profile that’s aged nicely. The redesign sees only modest changes to the front and rear. In this case, less change is a good thing.
Good news for anyone living where the weather can take a bad turn: The A7, unlike the 8 Series Gran Coupe or CLS, comes standard with AWD.
At long last, the multimedia and controls system in the A7 has been modernized versus the prior setup, which used a control knob near the center armrest. This latest edition swaps it for a pair of large touchscreens in the center of the dash. There is still a learning curve, and some editors haven’t liked the same setup in other Audi models, but Geiger found new system vastly easier to use, especially at a glance. The cabin’s various screens play host to the A7’s camera views, too. The Audi offers 360-degree surround-view camera systems with up to seven camera views, which display a variety of angles and positions.
Believe it or not, the A7 is friendly to child seats. While you might not love the idea of juice boxes and candy wrappers thrown around your Audi, it’s nice to know the Latch anchors in the A7’s backseat are accessible and easy to use.
Audi makes some stylish interiors, and the same holds true for the redesigned A7. Fit and finish are superb: “It’s refined, lovely and what you’d expect from a luxury sedan,” Geiger wrote. “The design is clean and classy, and everything looks and feels appropriately upscale — especially the matte wood trim, which is plentiful.”
We saved this for last because some editors think the new A7 rides a little softer than its predecessor. In her review, however, Geiger praised the newfound ride comfort: “Yes, there’s a bit more body lean in corners in the 2019, but it remains admirably crisp and composed,” she wrote, adding that the “new comfort-bias tuning also benefits its ride: Air springs are optional, but my test car rode on the standard coil springs and optional 20-inch wheels, and it serenely navigated Chicago’s pothole season with little fuss.”

The controls are better than before but not without flaws. For starters, Apple CarPlay has a wireless connection but Android Auto does not, as Android has yet to implement it in any 2019 model-year vehicles. Some menus mix between the A7’s two screens, too: You select the head-up display with the bottom screen, for example, but adjust it with the upper one.
Headroom remains on the skimpy side for tall riders in back. Audi carved out a little more room back there for 2019, but the sloping roof impacts the total amount of headroom.
While trunk room in the A7 is good, the amount of storage space up front is another story. There is scant room to put smaller items like smartphones, as the new dual-screen system takes up most of the console. Even the compartment under the center armrest is skimpy.
