Vehicles Affected: Approximately 2,500 model-year 2019 Ford Ranger pickup trucks

The Problem: The two fasteners that secure the transmission shift cable bracket to the transmission housing may not have been torqued to specification, which could allow the bracket to become loose and the transmission to be in a gear state different from the shift position selected by the driver. It also could allow the driver to remove the ignition key (if equipped) with no instrument panel warning message or chime indicating that the transmission is not in Park. Either could allow unintended vehicle movement or a rollaway if the parking brake is not applied, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Ford said it is not aware of any related accidents or injuries.

The Fix: Dealers will properly torque the two fasteners and verify the proper operation of the transmission selector assembly. Prior to the repair, the parking brake should be applied whenever the truck is parked.

What Owners Should Do: Ford did not immediately announce an owner-notification schedule. Owners can call the automaker at 866-436-7332, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
