Not content with having only its partnership with five other automakers that will rapidly expand the North American electric-vehicle fast-charging network, BMW Group has announced an agreement with Tesla that will give drivers of BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce EVs access to Tesla’s Supercharger network.

Following a deluge of similar announcements, the BMW Group brings the count to approximately a third of all brands selling vehicles in the U.S. today that have penned such agreements with Tesla.

Find and Replace

BMW’s announcement follows the established format. Beginning in early 2025, drivers of existing BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce EVs will be able to use Tesla’s charging stations. These vehicles will have to use an adapter, as the North American Charging Standard plugs will not fit the Combined Charging Standard port heretofore used by other brands. Starting later in 2025 — exact timing hasn’t yet been announced — BMW will fit its vehicles with NACS ports on the assembly line.

It’s fair to view this agreement and BMW’s joint venture with GM, Honda, Hyundai-Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis as short- and long-term steps, respectively, toward the same goal. While the joint venture’s stated goal is to open at least 30,000 chargers around North America, it will not begin opening those chargers until summer 2024. Tesla operates more than 21,000 Superchargers at nearly 2,000 locations across the U.S. already.
