CARS.COM — Cars and music go together like Simon & Garfunkel. Musicians have made liberal mention of cars throughout the history of pop music — from the Beach Boys’ “Little Deuce Coupe” to Bruce Springsteen’s “Pink Cadillac,” and from Prince’s “Little Red Corvette” to Eddie Vedder crooning in Pearl Jam’s “Wishlist” about how he longed to be the “full moon shining off a Camaro’s hood.”

My personal favorite model mention comes from Kanye West in “Clique,” where Yeezus states: “Yeah, I’m talkin’ business, we talkin’ CIA / I’m talkin’ George Tenet, I seen him the other day / He asked me ’bout my Maybach [pronounced “May-back” here], think he had the same / Except mine tinted and his might’ve been rented.”

Speaking of Kanye, hip-hop artists may talk about cars in their music more than any other popular genre. Auto retailer AutoNation conducted a study of car mentions in music, and the top nine artists entirely comprised rappers like Lil Wayne, Jay Z, Eminem and … um, Insane Clown Posse(?).

Hip-hop artists also dominated AutoNation’s list, Most Mentioned Cars in Top Artists’ Music. Rihanna was the only non-rapping member of the Mercedes-Benz-obsessed top five (artist followed by their most-talked-about brand or brands):

5. Rihanna, Bugatti and Mercedes-Benz
4. Future, Bentley and Mercedes-Benz
3. Fetty Wap, Mercedes-Benz
2. Kanye West, Mercedes-Benz
1. Drake, Mercedes-Benz

But Mercedes wasn’t the top brand among all pop stars, and the most popular automakers in music are surprisingly light on luxury. Here is AutoNation’s list of Top 10 Most Mentioned Car Brands in Music:

10. Honda
9. Buick
8. Mitsubishi
7. Lincoln
6. Ford
5. Dodge
4. Jeep
3. Cadillac
2. Mercedes-Benz
1. Chevrolet
