Volvo’s first recall of the new year affects roughly 27,400 of its model-year 2023 vehicles. The recall involves the vehicles’ antilock brake, electronic stability control and traction control systems.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2023 C40 Recharge electric vehicles; S60 sedans; V60, V60 Cross Country and V90 Cross Country wagons; and XC40, XC60 and XC90 SUVs. The issue has to do with a diagnostic error that may prevent the brake control module from working properly, potentially causing a loss of ABS, electronic stability control and traction control. This could result in a stiff brake pedal and difficulty coming to a complete stop, increasing the risk of a crash.
To resolve the issue, the automaker will release an over-the-air software update for free. Volvo will begin notifying owners March 15; those with further questions in the meantime can call Volvo at 800-458-1552 (Volvo’s number for this recall is R10217), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
