Technology keeps seeping into new cars at a rapid clip. Chrysler’s latest digital offering in three upcoming models is a built-in hard drive that not only stores the navigation system software but can also rip CDs just like a home computer.
Called MyGig, the system includes a 20-gigabyte ruggedized hard drive that can copy music straight from CDs and store it for later use. There’s also a USB port to download songs from other sources, like portable hard drives.
Besides the hard drive, the system features some other useful features, including Bluetooth hands-free calling, a 6.5-inch LCD display and a line-in jack for portable MP3 players. One model from each of Chrysler’s divisions will feature the system as an option: the Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Nitro and Jeep Wrangler.
Prices haven’t been announced for the system, but expect it to cost about the same as today’s navigation units (around $2,500) as part of an option package.
While many drivers might not be interested in these capabilities, we predict MyGig is a precursor of things to come. Expect more automakers to include optional hard drives for entertainment purposes very soon; eventually they could even replace traditional CD-based car stereos.
