Last week, GM dove headlong into the electric pickup truck competition with the official unveiling of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup. Our sister site, PickupTrucks.com, covered it with a focus on how the truck appears: an extremely capable off-road vehicle, at least on paper. You can check out that story for all the off-roading details, but let’s look at three things you need to know about GM’s new electric pickup truck.

1. It’s Powerful

Just how powerful the Hummer is depends which version you buy. GM plans to offer four:

  • The three-motor Edition 1 looks to be the priciest, fully loaded version. On sale in fall 2021, it has a GM-estimated 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pounds-feet of torque.
  • The 3X, which also packs three motors, arrives in fall 2022 with 800 hp and 9,500 pounds-feet of torque.
  • The 2X has two motors to make 625 hp and 7,400-pounds-feet of torque. It’s scheduled to arrive in spring 2023.
  • Finally, the 2 is the base model. It carries the same power ratings as the 2X and arrives in spring 2024.

No matter which version you choose, you’ll have plenty of horsepower. You’ll also likely have plenty of torque, though the GM-provided figures are more likely wheel torque than the more traditional engine-torque measurement (here’s an explanation of the difference from Engineering Explained). Have no fear, though: GM engineers estimate the engine-torque figure for the Edition 1 lands somewhere between 1,000 and 1,100 pounds-feet. So, yeah. Still a lot.

With the optional Watts to Freedom performance feature — a launch mode that also lowers the truck for better aerodynamics — the Edition 1 can go from 0-60 mph in a GM-claimed 3.0 seconds. GMC calls the Hummer EV a “supertruck,” and with stats like that, you can see why.

2. It’s Pricey

According to GMC, the Edition 1 will cost $112,595 (all prices include destination according to a GM spokesperson), and reservations are currently full. Drop down to the 3X, and your wait extends an extra year, but you’ll pay at least $99,995. The 2X, meanwhile, will cost $89,995, while the 2 starts at $79,995. Reservations for those three models are still available.

3. It’s Really Meant to Go Off-Road

Again, check out the piece on PickupTrucks.com for full details, but here’s a quick rundown of just some of the features the Edition 1 will have to go off-road:

  • Standard 35-inch tires and the ability to accommodate 37-inchers
  • CrabWalk, a feature that allows all four wheels to turn in one direction and move the Hummer EV diagonally at low speeds
  • Four-wheel steering for additional nimbleness
  • Extract mode, which lifts the Hummer EV another 6 inches to get over tough obstacles
  • 18 camera views, including forward- and rear-facing underbody cameras
  • Off-road widgets that display important information in 3D graphics
  • 350 miles of range and a unique one-pedal, off-road driving mode to regenerate energy while rock-crawling

As mentioned above, the Edition 1 should arrive in fall 2021. Reservations are fully refundable, and there’s some chance not every reservation holder will follow through on his or her purchase. As of this writing, reservations for the three less expensive, less equipped models remain available.
