Super Bowl 54 might as well have happened 54 years ago, what with the societal ruckus that followed. Patrick Mawho? Sorry. Somewhere between PPE and PPP, COVID-19 put the kibosh on a whole lot of nonessential jawing, not to mention far too many “nonessential” jobs. But think back to February, and you might remember a particular commercial during the Big Game that signaled a big return for GM: Hummer, a brand the General jettisoned in 2010 amid high gas prices.

Well, gas is no longer so expensive, and it won’t matter anyway because the resurrected Hummer — now a single vehicle, specifically a pickup truck, under GM’s GMC brand — is all-electric.

In its final seconds, the ad promised a reveal of GMC’s Hummer on May 20, but GM backed off that date in late April amid a coronavirus-shuttered auto industry. Enthusiasts, fear not: The automaker didn’t let the day go by with nothing to reveal.

GM released a short teaser video looking at a starlit sky through the Hummer’s removable roof panels. Absent those panels, the Hummer has what appears to be a T-top configuration over the rear seats with a roofless space over the front seats between the windshield frame and B-pillars. In a statement, GM said the “zero-emissions, zero-limits GMC Hummer EV features easily removable roof panels to provide a unique open-air experience.”

The automaker said in April that it’s still developing the Hummer for production later this year, so the Super Bowl ad’s promise of late 2021 availability to consumers may remain intact.

“Stay tuned here for more news about our all-electric super truck in the coming months,” GM said.
