The first iteration of the Nissan Titan XD was a bit of a head-scratcher — offering (and costing) buyers more than a regular Titan, but not matching the three-quarter-ton heavy-duty pickup trucks most other manufacturers offer for those who need more from a half ton. Having driven the second-generation Titan XD, reviewer Aaron Bragman thinks Nissan is doing a better job of making the Titan XD’s case.

“Nissan has simplified the lineup,” writes Bragman, “eliminated the rarely purchased diesel engine, made 4×4 standard and put together the new XD with a new marketing idea: Don’t think of it as a separate model, but rather as the ultimate towing package for the regular Titan.”

It can be the ultimate towing package because despite sharing engines and looks, underneath the skin of the Titan XD is an entirely different frame from the regular Titan that’s fully boxed and ready to help you haul payload or tow. It also has some sturdier powertrain bits to help with the added strain.
